Mallick Vitalian was born and raised in the northern Arathi Highlands. He was a member of one of the remaining groups that considered themselves the successors to one of the tribes and bloodlines that existed before Thoradin unified them into one nation. Thus, the Vitalian family and many others considered themselves separate from Stromgarde as a nation. Eventually, the Arathi Freedom Movement was formed to attempt to gain more autonomy from the capital. Mallick Vitalian, as one of the generals in the army, was in a good position to contribute a lot to the rebellion.
Eventually, he accepted the pardon issued to all who would be willing to serve the king again. This was done when the Freedom Movement was at its final stages of failure, and out of desperation.
The Benefactors engineered a coup to put him in power.
